Retired Reno police K9 Niko, a narcotics dog who helped seize thousands of pounds of illegal drugs during an eight-year career, died Friday, Oct. 23.

The Reno Police Department announced Niko's passing in a Facebook post, calling the dog's service one of lasting impact on the community. 2News also reported on the department's tribute.

Niko began his law enforcement career in October 2014. Over the next eight years, he worked alongside a range of local, state and federal partners, according to the department. Those agencies included the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Amtrak Police. He also worked with specialized units within the Reno Police Department itself.

The department said Niko was responsible for locating thousands of pounds of illegal narcotics and contraband during his years of service.

Off the clock, Niko had a different reputation. The department said he loved meeting new people and was always eager to trade extra kisses for a belly rub.

Niko retired from active duty on Jan. 13, 2022. He spent his remaining years at home with his handler, Officer White, and White's family. The department thanked the White family for providing Niko with a loving home and exceptional care through retirement, giving him the chance to enjoy life after service.

The department highlighted the bond between a K9 handler and partner, saying Niko's legacy would endure through the lives he touched and the difference he made during his career.

His service dates ran from October 2014 through January 2022. The department recorded his end of watch as Oct. 23, 2026.
