Drivers on Sparks Boulevard face a week of lane closures and delays starting Monday, Nov. 2, as paving crews take over the stretch between Prater Way and Baring Boulevard.
The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County will conduct daytime paving through Saturday, Nov. 7, according to KOLO. Motorists should expect intermittent closures at Tyco Way, Express Street and Springland/O'Callaghan while crews work.
The paving is part of the larger Sparks Boulevard Capacity Improvement project, which stretches from Greg Street to Baring Boulevard. Construction on the southern segment between Greg Street and Interstate 80 is already complete, according to the RTC's project page. Crews are now advancing roadway widening and paving on the northern portion.
The RTC encourages drivers to use alternate routes and allow extra travel time, 2 News reported.
The speed limit through the work zone has been reduced to 30 mph around the clock, according to the project's website. Construction hours generally run from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the northbound direction and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the southbound direction, Monday through Friday. Nighttime and weekend work are also possible.
Pedestrians face detours, too. The multi-use path on Sparks Boulevard between Prater Way and O'Callaghan Drive/Springland Drive is closed. The signed detour runs along Pullman Drive to Union Street and Union Street to O'Callaghan Drive/Springland Drive. The sidewalk on the east side of Sparks Boulevard is also closed from Springland Drive to Baring Boulevard.
Business access along the corridor will be maintained, the project website states.
Garrett Rodgers, RTC project manager, said the agency appreciates the patience of commuters and residents. "The Sparks community has been very patient during this busy construction season, and we look forward to completing this project on schedule in June 2027," Rodgers said, according to KOLO.
Granite Construction Company is the contractor for both the north and south phases of the project. Residents can sign up for construction text alerts by texting "Sparks" to 866-540-8466.
