Christine Mitchell, 47, pleaded no contest to charges tied to the Freds Mountain Fire, which merged with the Bug Fire and burned nearly 93,733 acres across Nevada and California this summer.
Mitchell entered her plea during an arraignment Monday, Oct. 26, KOLO reported. She had been charged with third-degree arson, possession of a controlled substance and failing to maintain proof of insurance.
Investigators said Mitchell intentionally started multiple fires near Freds Mountain Road on Aug. 9 and told responding crews she was responsible, according to Fox Reno. Those fires became the Freds Mountain Fire, which later merged with the Bug Fire to form one of the largest wildfire events in the region this year.
Court documents released in August detailed the events leading to the fire. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District crews encountered Mitchell and her two dogs on the hillside of Freds Mountain about four hours after the fire started, just before 2 p.m. on Aug. 9, KOLO reported at the time. The firefighters told the Washoe County Sheriff's Office they believed Mitchell had started the fire.
Mitchell told police she believed she was being hunted by members of the Hells Angels and had been on the mountain for 48 to 72 hours trying to avoid main roads, according to the probable cause document. She said she lit fires using a BIC lighter to create smoke, hoping someone would come help her flee the area.
She told police she was surprised by how quickly the fire grew.
During a pat-down search after her arrest, a Washoe County Sheriff's Office deputy found a substance consistent with methamphetamine, according to the probable cause document. Mitchell told police she had been using methamphetamine and was not taking medication for diagnosed mental health conditions.
Her bail had been set at $80,000 in August with no 10% cash option.
The fire threatened homes in northern Washoe County before merging with the Bug Fire, which burned across both Nevada and California counties.
Mitchell faces third-degree arson as the lead charge when she appears for sentencing. She is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 4.
